The first step in treating buttock pain from piriformis syndrome is getting an accurate
diagnosis. There are a number of conditions that cause pain in the buttocks similar to piriformis syndrome,
including spinal disc problems and overpronation of the foot.
A physical therapist can suggest appropriate exercises that may help. Many of these can be done
in the convenience of your home or office. They don't require any special equipment. These exercise are designed to
relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve, which is often compressed or damaged in piriformis syndrome cases.
Hydrotherapy, massage, and ultrasound may also be recommended.
Since piriformis syndrome is often caused by inflammation, your doctor may recommend
over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen.
In cases where the pain persists or grows progressively worse, an injection using a combination
of lidocaine (an anesthetic) and cortisone (an anti-inflammatory drug) may be used. Botox treatments are also
appropriate in certain cases.
Injections are usually a temporary fix for the buttock pain caused by piriformis syndrome, but
they can help relieve discomfort while the patient pursues more permanent solutions through therapy and other
means.
